The Name Johnston ???

With the decision of whether to re-name our school out there. Do the people trying to put Johnston at the end of the school name even know who this person was. I attended Albert Sidney Johnston for 3 momentous years and was proud of the name adopted for our school. He was a great general for the South. As a matter of fact, if not the most decorated one of the most decorated generals of his time. A very proud American and I do not believe putting his name after a location (eastside) gives justice to the great man. Look his name up in the internet and read for yourself his life and accomplishments. Check out the names of other high schools around  Austin and you will find that the names of Lanier, Travis, Austin, McCullum, Crockett, Regean etc. are men who built Texas in one way or another and to honor them schools, buildings and towns were named after them. To place their name after North,South, East or West is no honor at all. Believe me, even though I live in Corpus Christi. The time will come when the name Eastside will have no meaning. I see new development going in East Austin that will change the image of Eastside. Money is coming in from other states and things will change.

RE: Voting for the New Johnston Name

Richard, the first blame of having to rename Johnston was the "No Child Left Behind" rules and the Texas law which stated that the school had to be closed, repurposed, and renamed.

Now, the current blame goes to 2 PTSA members who have no ties to Johnston as they attended other high schools. They took a few students to the school board meeting and spoke against placing Johnston at the beginning of the school name.

Choosing the new Johnston name is good news/bad news.  The good news is that if all Johnston allumni and all Johnston almuni friends and family vote for the new Johnston name, we will win with no problem.  We have over 20,00 rams out there, whereas the current number of students are just about 1000, and some of them are rams as well.  The bad news is that we have to work to get the news out to all the rams to vote.  That will require us to make calls, write e-mails, make and deliver flyers, etc.

Spread the word and tell others to spread the word!  We can get our name back!
