Johnny Paul Roland - Class Of 1962

John "Johnny" Paul Roland. April 19, 1944 - August 24, 1965.  Died at the age of 21.  Served in South Vietnam.

The body of 21-year-old Marine, Lance Corporal John P. Roland, one of the victims of a crash of C-130 plane Monday in Hong Kong harbor, will be returned to Austin for funeral services.  The young Marine, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Roland of 2324 East Second Street, first had been listed as missing following the crash.  Mission Funeral Home here said Friday that the body has been recovered.  THe Marine Corps has not yet notified the funeral home of the time the body will arrive in Austin, and services are pending.  The tragedy occurred just after takeoff from Hong Kong.  The The plane was carrying a load of Marines back to Viet Nam after a leave in Hong Kong.  Roland is a graduate of Johnston High School.  Besides his parents, survivors include five brothers, Jesse Roland, Rudy Roland, Richard Roland, Jimmy Roland and Billy Roland;a sister, Betty Jo Roland;and the grandfather, Carlos Cardenas all of Austin.  Burial Assumption Cemetery.
