A Christmas flight by an Austin mother to try to save the life of her Air Force sergeant son was cut short Wednesday with the announcement of his death.

Sgt. Arthur Acosta, Jr., 23, of 2811 Lyons, who had been serving in Thailand, was found unconscious Sunday.  The family was not immediately advised of the cause of his condition.

He was rushed to Clark Field Hospital in the Philippines, where doctors suggested that t bedside visit by his wife or mother might help.  His wife, Lorenza, was unable to make the trip because she is pregnant.  His mother, Mrs Arthur Acosta Sr., also of 2800 Lyons, left late Tuesday for the Philippines.  Her flight was cut short when she was notified in San Francisco of her son's death on Christmas Day.  Funeral is pending at Angel Funeral Home.

Besides his wife and mother Acosta is survived by his father;Arthur Acosta Sr; two sons, Louis and Randy Acosta all of Austin; and grandparents, Mrs Austin, a brother, Pvt. Jose E Concepcion Acosta of Mexico. Acosta stationed in Arizona; and Joaquin Comancho Miss Marie Acosta of Austin.
