Ricardo “Rocky” Medrano, age 71, died on Saturday, December 26, 2015, in Austin, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 9, 1944 in Mathis, Texas to Albino and Catalina Medrano. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert, Frank, and Genaro, and his sister Lucia. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Medrano, three children, Ricardo Medrano, Jr. (Margaret), Rocky Medrano, Jr. (Theresa), and his daughter, Roxann Amel (Doug). Rocky is also survived by his grandchildren, A.J. Sotelo (Mayra), R.C., Ryan, Mia, and Adam Medrano, great-grandchildren, Camila and Andre Sotelo.
Rocky graduated from Johnston High School in 1964. In 1975, he graduated with Associates Degree in Law Enforcement from Central Texas College. In 1977, he graduated with Bachelors in Criminal Justice from South West Texas State University. In his early life, he was a North American Junior Welterweight Champion (Retired 1972). His law enforcement career consisted of being the original DPS S.W.A.T team negotiator, retired as a DPS Trooper after 22 years, and was the Travis County Constable for Precinct 4 for seven years. In the final years of his life he was a DWI instructor for the people around the East Austin community.
In his life, he found the most happiness in helping the community of East Austin. This was shown through our his 30 years of being a little league coach, taught catechism at Dolores Catholic Church for several years, Co-founder and President of Greater East Austin Optimist Club, he was inducted into the Austin Sport Hall of Fame in 1997, and served on the Pam-Am Recreation Center Advisory Board for eight years.
The Medrano family will receive friends and family from noon to 9:00 P.M. Wednesday, at the Angel funeral home, where recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 P.M. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, at Dolores Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are: A.J. Sotelo, R.C., Ryan, and Rocky Medrano, Jr., Larry DeLeon, and Jimmy Diaz.
