Buster Eugene Smith - Class Of 1973 VIEW PROFILE

U.S. Veteran

Buster Eugene Smith, II was born in Austin, Texas, on November 17, 1954, to Buster Smith, Sr. and Annie M. Jones, of Austin, Texas. He departed this life on January 30, 2021.

Buster, A.K.A. Bushwack, graduated from Johnston High and was later nicknamed the “Big Man” on campus. He pledged for Omega Psi Fi (Q-Dog) during his time at Prairie View A&M. His confidence, stature, and larger than life approach to living paved the way to his career in the United States Army, where he served for more than a decade and attained the ranking of SFC (E-7). During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Alverta Smith, and they shared many playful, passionate adventures together, including the raising of their two children, Deidre and Buster III. He was a loving father, always fun, and a great cook who’s booming, boisterous laugh we will forever remember and cherish. At 6’7” he was a presence and protector that will be missed in our lives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Buster Smith, Sr.; and his brother, Morris Jones.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Annie Jones; former wife, Alverta Smith; his daughter, Deidre Smith; son, Buster Smith III; his brother, Jaque Chardonnay (Cheryl); sister, Sheryl Robinson; his grandchildren, Eric Smith, Buster Smith IV, and Kendra Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Addiction does not discriminate. We choose to honor and remember Buster not based on his addiction and mistakes, but as the loving, funny, larger than life father and husband that he was. He loved to tell a good story. You never knew how much of it was true, but it was always hilarious, none the less.

Thank you for honoring and remembering our fallen soldier with us.
