Alfonso Guajardo Mendoza Jr. “Fancy” was born to Alfonso Sr. and Elvira Mendoza on January 23, 1943 and died peacefully in his home with family at his bedside on November 20, 2020.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alfonso Sr. and Elvira Mendoza, his sisters Olivia Casarez and Minerva Garcia, in-laws Pete and Lupe Espinoza and son-in-law Matt Furry.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years Rebecca Marie Mendoza who was the love of his life; his daughter Deanna Furry and her sons Preston and Brendan; son Greg and his wife Monica and their daughter Briana and sons Greg-Anthony, Jeremy and Timothy; son Chris and his daughter Alexa and son Jaden; son Mario and his wife Kelly and sons Mario Jr., Max, Jack and Will; his brother Ray Mendoza and wife Lupe, sister Nina Paniagua, sister Mary Estrada and husband Moe and sister Gloria Ortegon and husband Fernando along with numerous nephews and nieces.

Alfonso was a lifelong resident of Austin who retired from the US Postal Service with 30 years of service and from The University of Texas with 12 years. He was a man of faith who was a parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church for over 30 years and recently was a parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was a passionate Texas Longhorn fan who loved rooting on his beloved Texas Longhorns in all sports, especially football. He loved the game of golf and enjoyed playing with his weekly senior group and with his sons until his medical condition prevented him from playing any longer. What he enjoyed most was spending time with his family and what made him especially proud was watching his grandchildren grow and succeed!

Visitation will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 followed by recitation of the rosary at 7 pm at Cook Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home at 14501 N. IH-35 in Pflugerville. Unfortunately, due to Covid, recitation of the rosary will be limited to immediate family.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church at 10 am, located at 9500 Neenah Ave. in Austin.

Interment will immediately follow at Cook Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville.

 

Pallbearers will be his grandsons Preston Furry, Brendan Furry, Greg-Anthony Mendoza, Jeremy Mendoza, Timothy Mendoza, Mario Mendoza Jr., Max Mendoza and Jaden Mendoza. Honorary pallbearers will be Briana Mendoza, Alexa Mendoza, Jack Hoggard and Will Hoggard.

The Mendoza family would like to thank the medical staff at Austin Heart Hospital especially Dr. Jerome Thomas and the staff of Encompass Health Care along with all the family and friends that offered their support and prayers during this difficult time.
