Chencho Flores Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harrell Funeral Home of Austin on Jun. 10, 2024.
Our beloved Chencho "Chico" Flores, Jr., born June 21, 1953, in Austin, Texas, peacefully passed away Thursday, May 30, 2024. Chencho was a caring and loving person to all who knew him.
Chencho's passions included teaching, photography, music and watching his favorite sports' teams with family and friends. Chencho enjoyed trips to Big Bend, South Padre Island and visiting museums. He had a love for reading, keeping up with current events and had a real appreciation for other cultures and good food.
Chencho always made it a point to introduce himself to new neighbors and spread kindness within his community. He also enjoyed participating in the Keep Austin Beautiful program annually.
Chencho graduated from Albert Sydney Johnston high school in Austin, Texas in 1971. He attended St. Edwards University from 1971 through 1975 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Bilingual Elementary Education. His career began at Elgin Elementary, and he continued his teaching career at Huston Tillotson University, as an English teacher. He taught at Austin Community College, and in Galveston Texas, and taught English as a second language at Cristo Rey, El Buen Samaritano and Woodlawn Baptist churches. He instructed GED adult education classes at Goodwill Industries. He had a great love for teaching as that was his passion in his adult life. Chencho believed all kids could learn and he used creativity and humor when teaching. His dream was to return to teaching even as he approached the young age of 70.
His love for photography and journalism started during his high school years. He took many pictures for the high school paper and yearbook and was also a member of the Johnston high school marching band.
Chencho was a caring and loving grandfather. His grandchildren brought extreme joy and happiness to his life. The time spent with his grandchildren was very precious and special to him. He would buy books for them and always tried to teach and share his knowledge with them every opportunity he had. His grandchildren loved when he would take them to the carnival on Ben White and Pecan Street festival, and like a loving grandparent bought them their favorite treats and toys.
The best way to honor our beloved Chencho is to have a sense of humor, spend time with your friends and loved ones.
