Magdalena Cortez, 74, of Austin, TX, passed away in Elgin, TX on January 16th, 2025.

Often lovingly referred to as Maggie or Lena by numerous friends and family. Born on July 22nd, 1950 in Buda, TX to parents, Gerardo Cortez and Maria A. Cortez. Magdalena was a lifelong resident of Austin, growing up in Montopolis. She attended and graduated from A.S. Johnston High School. Later becoming an alumni of Concordia University, and later a graduate of Texas State University, with a degree in Spanish. She was a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

Magdalena was a retired employee of The State of Texas, working for the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, later working and retiring from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Magdalena was a godmother, lovingly referred to as “Aunt Lena” and “#1.” She was a sports fan, with favorite teams including the Atlanta Braves, UT Longhorns, and The Dallas Cowboys. Lena was also a huge fan of music, attending many concerts over the years with friends and family. She was known to always help and support family and friends.

She will be missed for her caring and loving nature.

Love actually is all around.

She is survived by her daughter, Katarina I. Cortez; sisters, Anita C. Moreno (Manuel Sr.) and Rosita Cortez; nephews, Manuel Jr., Andrew (Claudia), Julius (Jessica); niece, Alma (Darrin); great-nephews, Nicholas Cortez, Eli and Jude Jackson, Andrew Philip Moreno; and great-nieces, Luna Jackson and Esperanza Moreno.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerardo and Maria A. Cortez; and brothers, Pedro and Ramon Cortez.

A visitation for Magdalena will be held Friday, January 24, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704. A funeral service will occur Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704. An entombment will occur Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Onion Creek Memorial Park, 11610 Chapel Ln, Austin, TX 78748.
