Mark Douglas Baker was a beacon of light in the lives of many. Born on February 23, 1959, in the heart of Austin, Texas. Tragically, the sunset on Mark's life on August 19, 2024.
Mark was gifted with a jovial spirit that radiated warmth and generosity. He possessed a remarkable ability to fill a room with laughter. His charismatic charm, coupled with his legendary basketball skills, made him a beloved figure in the Austin community. Mark was a proud graduate of Johnston High School in 1979. After graduating, he joined The United States Marines Corps Reserves where he served for five years.
Mark's mastery of the art of laughter and genuine love for people ensured that he left a unique "mark" on everyone he met. As the jovial and reliable "Mr. Make it happen," Mark was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. An ardent lover of sports, Mark enjoyed watching all games, fishing, and shooting pool and of course playing basketball. He also enjoyed singing in the choir. Additionally, he worked many years as a certified locksmith.
Mark's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He accepted Christ at an early age. After marrying the love of his life in 1988 he soon joined Mt Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor LL Carter. One of his most cherished accomplishments was becoming an ordained deacon at Mt. Pleasant in 1995. As a devoted follower of Christ, he served diligently on the deacon board, Bible study discussion, Sunday school, in the praise choir, and male chorus. He was also a member of the security team, often found guarding the doors of the church. His faith was beautifully encapsulated in the verse, "We love because He first loved us" (1 John 4:19). God was first in Mark's life, followed by his family, but his love extended to all.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Jewel Thorne. As well as brothers, Curtis (Annie) and Billy Jo Baker; and his sisters, Francis and Ruby Baker.
Mark's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Carolyn (a.k.a. Kaye), their daughters, Jasmine and Arteja, their precious granddaughters, Jade and Jaycee; one brother, Bobby Baker, and several special nieces, cousins, brother and sister-in-laws, and friends. Extraordinary friends: Willie Revels, Paul Swist, Eddie Arnold, Greg Burditt, each of the Harvesters, and ALL of his nephews.
